The Opportunity
Cranmore is partnering with a innovative biotechnology company to find an exceptional R&D Manager to join their growing team in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
This is a pivotal leadership role for a scientist ready to step up and own the full R&D function — combining hands-on scientific expertise with strong people management and strategic programme delivery. You'll report directly to the COO and play a central role in shaping the future of a cutting-edge R&D department.
The Role
The R&D Manager will be responsible for the planning, delivery, and oversight of the company's Research and Development activities. You will provide scientific, technical, and people leadership to Project Teams and Technology R&D Teams, ensuring programmes are delivered efficiently, on time, and in compliance with quality systems and regulatory requirements.
You will lead R&D staff, oversee laboratory operations and resources, and drive continuous improvement across R&D processes. You will also act as Programme Lead for Molecule Projects and/or Technology R&D Programmes.
What You'll Be Doing
• Report directly to the COO and provide regular updates on R&D performance and project status
• Line manage Senior Scientists, Scientists, and other R&D personnel
• Plan, prioritise, and deliver R&D projects and programmes in line with business objectives
• Provide scientific and technical oversight of experimental design, data quality, interpretation, and reporting
• Remove technical and operational bottlenecks and manage project risks
• Ensure R&D activities comply with ISO9001 and other applicable quality and regulatory standards
• Contribute to and implement best practices to improve quality, efficiency, and effectiveness
• Review and approve technical reports, presentations, and publications
• Foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and professional development within the R&D team
What You'll Bring
• PhD in Biology, Chemistry, or a related discipline — or MSc with significant relevant experience
• Biotechnology industry experience
• Proven experience leading R&D projects and managing scientific teams
• Strong expertise in analytical techniques (e.g. SEC-HPLC, SEM, Micro-BCA, Microscopy, IEC-HPLC, ELISA, SDS-PAGE)
• Experience in formulation and drug delivery
• Strong problem-solving, data analysis, and decision-making skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred
• Experience with biologics and/or polymer development
• Experience working in ISO9001, ISO13485, and/or cGMP environments
